My soccer playing offspring couldn’t find enough space in any of our local parks to kick the ball around to prepare for college tryouts in the spring of 2005.

Why?

Because there are simply not enough fields in greater western Los Angeles to meet existing youth and adult team sports [soccer, football, baseball, etc.] demand.

This will only worsen with tremendous growth pressure.

‘Highest and best use of land’ in the Los Angeles planning process typically means covering every square inch of buildable area with structure.

Playable field spaces consequently fall into the cracks of urban planning for recreational open space.

The assumption is boulder strewn pocket parks and rooftop gardens will be adequate to accommodate expanding population density in L.A.

It’s time to change course.
